Our English curriculum has three main aims:
Empowerment: We want to teach students the power of being confident but also critical readers. We also want them to become effective communicators in both written and verbal forms. In our classrooms, we intend to provide frequent oracy opportunities so students can discover, develop and use their voices.
Creativity: We want students to investigate and have fun with language in a variety of forms and inspire them to explore who they are in creative ways.
Empathy: Through the study of a range of novels, plays, poetry and literary non-fiction, we want students to better understand the world around them, past and present. In the words of the great Atticus Finch “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb in his skin and walk around in it.” Through the text choices we provide students with, we hope that they understand that all great literature helps us to become more sensitive to the lives of others – a critical 21st century skill.
