Working Towards a One-site Solution

As a school, we are committed to creating a high-quality learning environment for our students and staff and continue to manage the challenges of maintaining our historic school buildings.
It has been a long-standing ambition to unite our split site school onto one location in Crediton. This involves us working closely with decision makers such as Devon County Council and the Department for Education. With limited national and regional funding available and the need to consider future plans for residential growth in the town of Crediton, it is a complex and emerging picture. We will continue to work in partnership with all stakeholders to find the right long-term solution for a single-site school within our community.
Whilst we progress with this ambition, we are continuing to invest in buildings on both QE sites at Lower School (Barnfield) and Upper School (Western Road) to ensure they are safe, warm and dry for our current students.
As part of the Ted Wragg Trust, we benefit from School Condition Allocation funding, which helps to finance the ongoing repair work needed. In recent times we have completed the following projects:
-
New heating system at Lower School
-
Sports Hall and Technology block boiler replacements at Upper School
-
Sixth Form Learning Hub
We will continue to carry out works this academic year and will keep our community updated in our school newsletters.
Our long-term ambition is the transformation of College House to provide arts education for the school and wider community. College House is a Grade II listed building in the centre of Crediton and the heart of our Western Road Campus. Built in 1859, it is typical of gothic revival architecture.
Due to the condition of the building, College House is temporarily closed so that we can carry out essential repair work.
We are exploring options to repair and modernise College House in line with its heritage status, and any additional funding streams that this will require. We are conscious of the architectural importance of College House and its potential as a facility that could be used in the future by both students and the wider community. College House has been at the heart of QE, and Crediton, for generations, and we want it to continue inspiring students and the community for many more. We’re excited to work with our community to explore how this historic building can become a shared space for learning, creativity, and connection.
Community events
We want our community to be part of shaping our vision from the start. In Autumn 2025/Winter 2026, we hosted a series of family and community drop-in events to give people an opportunity to find out more about our early ideas and share their thoughts on how this opportunity can meet the needs of students and the Crediton community.
It was wonderful to speak to so many members of our community and to hear about the personal and family connections to College House. Conversations during the events clearly demonstrated the rich history of Crediton and the detailed local knowledge, and there is now an exciting opportunity to honour this legacy whilst creating a space fit for future generations.
We’re now taking time to reflect on the feedback received and will share our next steps when we have information to share. In the meantime, you can take a look at the information boards below or get in contact on [email protected].
