We believe in a Design and Technology curriculum based on an iterative design process and project-based learning. Learners build a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality products for a wide range of users and critique, evaluate, and test their ideas and products and the work of others.

Students learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising, and capable human-beings, in line with the core values of our school. We believe that a high-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth, health, and well-being of the nation.

Students are introduced at KS3 to the three concepts of designing, making and materials through the three crafts of Resistant Materials, Food Technology and Product Design. At KS4 and KS5 students are able to further their learning and skills by selecting one of the GCSEs or A levels that we provide in the Design and Technology Department at QE.

In the 21st century it is almost as important to be digitally literate as it is to be literate. With this in mind we provide our learners from KS3 onwards an opportunity to explore the digital world beginning their journey into computational thinking with key concepts of programming, e.g. simple algorithms, sequencing, block coding, variables and debugging using Scratch and then progressing to Micro:bit. Students learn from the outset how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising, and capable human-beings within the digital world.

As students progress through the key stages, they are introduced to textual programming languages such as Microsoft Small Basic and Python.
