QE’s Partner Primaries put through their Paces
The Crediton Sports Partnership has kicked off 2020 energetically, delivering a smorgasbord of sport to its partner primary schools, through their successful primary sports and leadership program.
On the menu, since Christmas, has been Gymnastics for Years 3 & 4, Multi-Skills for Years 1 & 2 and a Gifted and Talented session for Years 5 & 6, supported by the extremely professional Year 9 QE Sports Leaders.
First up this year was the Gymnastics Festival! The aims of the festival are to expand gymnastics knowledge and develop skills levels, to offer ideas to primary staff for future teaching sequences and to develop leadership skills for our Year 9 leaders.
Ten activities were on offer, covering key gymnastics skills, These included jumping and landing, upside down balances, shapes in the air, taking weight on hands, sequences, forward and circle rolls, partner balances, travelling with balance, upright balances and balancing on apparatus
Next up QE held their Multi-Skills session, which involved ten activity stations, adapted to
different sports; these included rounders, cricket, football, dodgeball, gymnastics, parachute games, rugby, basketball, netball and athletics, all received with great enthusiasm by the Year 1s & 2s!
The Gifted and Talented session followed, with selected pupils from years 5 & 6 invited to a three hour carnival, involving a series of workshops on identifying strengths and weaknesses, team tactics, dealing with failure, communication in team sports and fitness development.
Year 9 Sports Leader James Howard, who worked on the Gifted and Talented session said; “Working with the Year 5s and 6s from our local primary schools has been a really good experience. It was great to work with talented younger students, they will be a great asset to any local sports teams, in the area, in the future.”
Ross Gillon, PE Teacher in charge of the Sports Partnership, said; “We’ve had a fantastic 2020 with the Sports Partnership so far. All our young participants have shown great commitment and energy at each of the three sessions this year and our Year 9 Sports Leaders have proven themselves diligent and professional in their leadership. For many these events are the first time they have led anyone other than their classmates. Some refereed at the Year 5 & 6 Tag Rugby last term, but the majority entered the events with a mixture of fear and excitement. It was only just over 30 months ago that these students were taking part in leavers’ assemblies as Year 6’s at primary schools! I am very proud of them!”
