Year 10 Food & Nutrition students had the pleasure of a visit from two Tesco fishmongers and 20 large, fresh mackerel.
The students had to learn how to gut and fillet a fish as part of the new GCSE course.
Once they had overcome their squeamishness about the fact that the fish came with a head and guts, the students learnt how to prepare them. They gutted, boned, filleted and butterflied the mackerel before gently sautéing in butter and eating with buns and mayonnaise – a great, healthy alternative to beef burgers.
The fishmongers made this look so easy, but it was certainly a challenge. All of the students did a great job and even had some left over fresh mackerel fillets to take home.
Many thanks to the Tesco team for giving up their time and providing the mackerel.
