Millie Twigg, a Year 8 student at Queen Elizabeth’s School in Crediton was sponsored to shave her head to raise funds for Alopecia UK.
Every year QE School encourages their students to raise money for Urafiki, a charity that supports education and health care projects in Kenya, and Edukid, a charity that helps children living in poverty and conflict to access an education, through fundraising projects. It was during this project that Millie spoke to her Head of Year, Miss Wood, about her thoughts on taking her fundraising further in order to raise funds for Alopecia UK, a condition that a member of her family suffers with.
Millie said “my brother has Alopecia, so I wanted to raise awareness. My initial target was £100, but I had to raise it to £500 as I had so many people donate, I hit my target really quickly!” Millie’s total currently stands at £1,780, which is nearly 18 times more than her initial goal! On top of this, Millie donated all of her hair to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides free real-hair wigs to children that have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other illnesses.
Millie’s sister helped her set up a Just giving page and they promoted the fundraising to her friends and family. They also created posters that were displayed in the school.
All of Millie’s family and friends are really proud, Millie’s mum, Caroline, said “Her teachers inspired her to do some fundraising, initially it was looking at £20 each for Urafiki, but Millie has taken it a step and leap further! We are all super proud of her!”
Miss Wood said “what’s been really good is that not only has Millie raised a lot of money, but she has raised a lot of awareness… she looks amazing and we are all very proud of her here at QE”
Millie is looking forward to experimenting with her hairstyles as she aims to grow it back to its original length.
