A Level Trip to Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival
A Level English Literature students travelled to Budleigh Salterton recently to attend the Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival, an inspiring event held in the beautiful St Peter’s Church.
Students and staff were lucky enough to hear Dame Hilary Mantel and Professor Emma Smith in conversation, with James Runcie, discussing the complexities and ambiguities of many of Shakespeare’s plays. Central to this discussion was Dr Smith’s new book, “This is Shakespeare” which Mantel described as having a “passion and curiosity that light up the page.
Students thoroughly enjoyed the discussion and were able to reflect on their own readings of Shakespeare’s plays and the validity of their own interpretations alongside that of eminent critics.
Many thanks to David Marston of the BLF Educational Outreach committee for his time and for inviting QE students and staff to this event.
