QE Student Wins RIBA Work Experience Competition

During July 2017, QE student Hannah Jones gained an insight into the workings of an architectural practice when she was welcomed by the LHC team in Exeter.

During Hannah’s work experience, she designed an entry for the RIBA South West Inette Austin-Smith work experience competition.

The RIBA competition is intended to be a condensed version of a typical architect’s commission. It is designed to encompass all the processes from taking a client’s brief, studying the requirements and constraints, researching background and precedents, creating a design concept, developing the design and finally communicating it… all in a week!

The brief for 2017 was to design a contemporary performance stage/stand for community use on an existing plot of land. Hannah rose to the challenge and had some unique ideas to fit the brief and submission requirements, such as using a flexible solar powered material that is currently used for military purposes. Hannah rightfully achieved joint 1st place with the highest scores in her categories.

Thank you to the LHC team for supporting Hannah during her work experience and a huge congratulations to Hannah for her amazing achievement!

Hannah has ambitions for a career in the world of architecture in a role in which she can incorporate maths and physics, subjects which she excels in at school.
