GCSE Results 2016

“We are very pleased with this year’s results. We have seen significant improvement in the GCSE grades the students have achieved and we have seen exceptional performances from many individuals, with an incredible 13% getting A* or A grades in at least 5 GCSE subjects, and 37% getting 5 or more at GCSEs at A* to B.

"Today is a very significant day in the lives of the youngsters and of course it is an emotional time and the culmination of all their hard work and studying. The atmosphere in school this morning was incredible and there were lots of happy faces, which was great to see. Of course it is also a very rewarding and emotional moment for the teachers as well. We look forward to welcoming many of the youngsters back into the Sixth Form in September. On behalf of all the staff, I would like to congratulate our students and wish them the very best for the future.

“In terms of the headline figures for the school, 2016 is the first year of a new set of measures introduced by the government, and it is going to take some getting used to! One of the all-important new measures is the English and maths threshold and I’m delighted to report that here at QE 69% of students achieved both English and maths GCSE at grade C or above. In English we have had outstanding results, with 85% of students getting a grade C or above. Maths is also impressive at 73% grade C and above. Our English Baccalaureate (EBACC) is also very pleasing at 26%, which represents the progress students make across a broad range of subjects. Nationally, there has been a decline in GCSE results, and we have bucked that trend with a significantly improving picture.

“The government has introduced a range of new measures, the main one being Progress 8. Progress 8 aims to capture the progress a pupil makes from the end of primary school to the end of secondary school. It is a type of value added measure, which means that QE pupils’ results are compared to the actual achievements of other pupils nationally. We will have to wait until late 2016 or early 2017 for the official Progress 8 score to be published, as it will take a while for the government to compile the figures. So, today, the focus is very much on the students, which is of course exactly as it should be.” Rupert Poole, Principal.

Hayley Wood, Year Team Leader for Year 11 said “It has been a real privilege to work with this fantastic year group, they are all wonderful young people and they demonstrated a brilliant work ethic throughout their time at QE. There has been a fantastic buzz here in school today. The elation on the faces of the students is great to see, they have been caring and supportive of each other throughout their time at QE, and today has been no different! I’m delighted with these results.”

This year our top attaining female student was Kiri Ley with 11A* grades and an A. Our top attaining male student was Tom Williams 8A* and 3 A grades.
